The ever growing need for secure communications and telemetry due to Cyber Security concerns has given way to new thinking in the development of secure communications and I/O devices. The potential threats to critical utility infrastructure that disrupt the operation and delivery of electrical, oil & gas, water and transportation services are real. Older legacy systems and communications infrastructure cannot easily cope with the needed demand for security.
The OSI Remote Information System (OSIRIS) is a secure Remote Terminal unit based on the Linux operating system. Featuring a modern design based on the latest 32 bit processor architecture, CANbus interface and modern I/O ports such as USB and CompactFlash, OSIRIS provides a flexible and expandable RTU for electrical distribution, oil & gas, water and other applications. Possible applications of OSIRIS include pole top applications for distribution as well as substation applications. With no need for superfluous network devices, OSIRIS has built-in IP capability with support to an array of master/slave protocols and IEC 61131 programming capabilities.
OSIRIS supports open protocols such as DNP3, IEC 870-5, and Modbus over both IP and serial connections. OSIRIS can operate as a master or slave device and can be expanded via an optional expansion module to support I/O points in multiples of its base unit. For larger applications, OSIRIS can act as an IP-based master in a substation, scanning other distributed OSIRIS units or IEDs over an IP network in the substation and acting as a single communications gateway with a remote master station. It also supports IEC 61131-3 PLC programming for building local control functions.
The economical cost of OSIRIS makes it an ideal modern network-based RTU for distribution applications including pole top unit operating over a Cellular or radio IP-based network.
