OSI to Supply the University of Minnesota with an Advanced SCADA System for its Electric Distribution System

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract by the University of Minnesota for a comprehensive SCADA system designed to automate the Universitys electric utility and potentially other campus operations for its Twin Cities Campus (Minneapolis and Saint Paul).

The project, which marks OSI's entry into the Campus Automation market, will provide the University with an innovative and expandable SCADA system featuring advanced functionality and capability which has not been typically available in this market.

The University has chosen OSI to implement its advanced Graphical User Interface system that will initially serve as a status board for the University's electric utility distribution system, and which can conveniently and efficiently provide real-time monitoring of the University's electrical facilities. As the system grows, the future intent will be to monitor the University's steam and chilled water utilities for operational status and energy use. The University's electrical, steam and water utilities provide efficient and reliable service to over 260 buildings covering an area of approximately 1,230 surface acres throughout the Twin Cities Campus.

The proposed system is based on OSI's monarch™ distributed open architecture and includes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Web-based Graphical User Interface, Historical Information System, Calculation and Trending subsystem, Data Disturbance Collection and Open Database Connectivity, as well as DNP and Modbus communications.

The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (www.umn.edu) is one of the largest public universities in the United States and ranks among the most prestigious. It is both the state land-grant university, with a strong tradition of education and public service, and the state's primary research university, with faculty of national and international reputation.
