OSI Technology Selected For SCADA / EMS Expansion by NRG

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been selected by NRG Energy (NRG), a Fortune 500 company with a portfolio of projects in North America, Europe and Australia, as the supplier of its automation systems for Generation Management and Energy Management across NRGs Eastern Interconnection Regions.

NRG, with corporate headquarters located in Princeton, New Jersey, provides reliable wholesale electricity safely and in a manner consistent with civic and environmental commitment to the communities it serves. NRG has been an OSI customer since 2001, using OSI technology for generation management of its Northeast Assets throughout PJM, NYISO and ISONE. NRG has embarked on a new initiative to consolidate its South Central and Northeast Assets into a single Energy Management System. The proposed system is based on OSI's monarch™ (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform and will provide NRG with a unified system for managing its operations in the North American Eastern Interconnection.

NRG's monarch platform will include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Front End Processing, Calculation and Trending subsystems, Disturbance Data Collection, Load Shed and Restoration, Secure ICCP Communications, Open Database Connectivity, Virtual Remote Terminal Units, Generation Control and Dispatch, Market Interfaces and Energy Market Control, NERC Performance Monitoring, Linux Development Tools and VMware infrastructure.

"With its diversified generation portfolio, NRG stands to benefit from the efficiency, reliability and support monarch delivers. OSI believes the selection of monarch technology by NRG, a leader in large scale generation, is a testament to the platforms proven ability to optimize the monitoring, control and scheduling of complex network operations while meeting stringent regulatory requirements," said Bahman Hoveida, President and CEO of OSI.

"Our company believes in investing in value. OSI's open platform architecture and powerful user friendly baseline systems give us strong value at an affordable price. This coupled with green initiatives that reduce our EMS servers from 75 to 11 make OSI the company of choice for NRG to invest in," said Gene Fulmer, NRG Regional IT / EMS Manager.

NRG Energy, Inc., a Fortune 500 company, owns and operates one of the country's largest and most diverse power generation portfolios. Headquartered in Princeton, NJ, the company's power plants provide more than 24,000 megawatts of generation capacity enough to supply more than 20 million homes. NRG's retail business, Reliant Energy, serves more than 1.7 million residential, businesses, commercial and industrial customers in Texas. A past recipient of the energy industry's highest honors -Platts Industry Leadership and Energy Company of the Year awards, NRG is a member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a group of business and environmental organizations calling for mandatory legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
