New Brunswick System Operator Awards OSI a Comprehensive New Energy Management System Contract

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract to replace the Energy Management System (EMS) and Supervisory Control and Acquisition (SCADA) system for the New Brunswick System Operator (NBSO) in New Brunswick Canada.

NBSO is a not-for-profit independent corporation whose primary responsibilities are to ensure the reliability of the electrical system and to facilitate the development and operation of a competitive electricity market in New Brunswick. As Reliability Coordinator for the Maritimes Area, NBSO is the authority responsible for the operation of the Bulk Power System in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and a portion of northeastern Maine.

The new system for NBSO will be replacing a legacy system supplied in the 1990's by Telegyr/Siemens. The new EMS is based on OSI's monarch™ distributed open architecture; including advanced EMS/Transmission monitoring and optimization Applications with functionality such as Network Security Analysis, Topology Processor, State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, Penalty Factor Calculation, Power Flow, Optimal Power Flow, Automatic Generation Control, Economic Dispatch, Reserve Monitoring, Production Costing, Switching Order Management, Operator Training Simulator, NERC Performance Monitoring, and System Interfaces to various corporate systems including Outage Management, Weather System, Market Management, Permit Management, and Corporate Data Warehouse/Historian.

The New Brunswick System Operator (NBSO) (www.nbso.ca) is an independent statutory corporation created under New Brunswick's Electricity Act on October 1, 2004. Under the Act, NBSO is responsible for the adequacy and reliability of the integrated electricity system, and for facilitating the development and operation of the New Brunswick Electricity Market. These responsibilities take the form of operation of the NBSO-controlled grid and administration of the Open Access Transmission Tariff (Tariff) and the New Brunswick Electricity Market Rules.
