One of USA's Largest Electricity Generators, AEP Selects OSI Technology for Two New Generation Management Systems

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been selected by American Electric Power (AEP), to provide two Generation Management Systems (GMS); for their SPP Generation assets in preparation for the upcoming SPP Integrated Marketplace, as well as for their PJM generation assets.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, AEP is one of America's largest generators of electricity, owning and operating about 80 generating stations in the United States, with a total capacity of nearly 38,000 megawatts. AEP's SPP and PJM generation assets total 10,000 and 11,000 megawatts respectively. Motivating factors for the selection of OSI technology included the need for a more modern generation platform that is reliable, offers users the flexibility to meet changing business needs, can readily comply with NERC CIP requirements and can easily integrate with other AEP applications.

AEP's new GMS systems are based on OSI's monarch™ (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform and include the advanced functionality presented by OSI's Advanced Alarm Management System; Historical Information System and Data Archiving; Inter-control Center Communications Protocol; NERC Performance Monitoring; Automatic Generation Control and Dispatch; and Market Operations System interfaces for SPP and PJM Markets.

AEP (www.aep.com) is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, delivering electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states. AEP also owns the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined. AEP's transmission system directly or indirectly serves about 10 percent of the electricity demand in the Eastern Interconnection, the interconnected transmission system that covers 38 eastern and central U.S. states and eastern Canada; and approximately 11 percent of the electricity demand in ERCOT, the transmission system that covers much of Texas.

OSI (www.osii.com) provides open, state-of-the-art and high-performance automation solutions to utilities worldwide. These solutions include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Network Management Systems (NMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and Generation Management Systems (GMS); as well as individual software and hardware products and Smart Grid Solutions for utility operations. OSI is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
