Major Investor Owned Utility Selects OSI Smart Grid Platform for Advanced Distribution Management

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been selected by a major investor owned utility (MIOU) to implement an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS). The MIOU has evaluated various industry solutions and has selected OSI technology as being the best technical solution to help them with substantive improvements in customer service and distribution reliability and to cope better with imminent weather disaster outages.

The MIOU covers a large service territory comprised of nearly 3 million retail and wholesale customers in and around major US metropolitan areas. The MIOU has decided to remain anonymous and refrain from publicity until the project is completed.

The integrated ADMS will support MIOU's large and growing size of the real time data that numbers in hundreds of thousands. The Distribution network model includes several thousand feeders imported from a GIS and hundreds of substations built and maintained within the OSI ADMS. Advanced SCADA and DMS functionality will be implemented in stages. The system will also include a full functioning Distribution Training Simulator to assist MIOU in training its operators for the new Advanced DMS. In addition, MIOU has decided to implement the highest levels of security for the system on par with the latest NERC CIP 5 requirements. The project schedule is nearly 14 months and the ADMS will go live in mid-2016.

"This project is focused on the efficient and secure operation of large scale distribution networks including detailed modeling of substations and feeders," said Hormoz Kazemzadeh, VP of Distribution and Smart Grid at OSI. "OSI's advanced DMS solution is designed to be highly scalable to meet the needs of all types of utilities as they modernize their grid and install large numbers of real time and automated devices."

OSI (www.osii.com) provides open, state-of-the-art and high-performance automation solutions to utilities worldwide.
