Hydro Ottawa Selects OSI Technology for Advanced Distribution Management System

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract by Hydro Ottawa Limited to implement an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) based on OSI's monarch™ (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform. This new system will replace Hydro Ottawa's legacy Schneider Electric/Telvent system.

Hydro Ottawa is a medium-sized local electricity distribution company, servicing more than 324,000 residential and commercial customers in the Ottawa area, as well as the nearby village of Casselman. Hydro Ottawa transports power from the provincial electricity grid across a distribution network comprised of 85 distribution stations, 2,700 kilometers of underground lines, 29,000 kilometers of overhead lines, 45,000 transformers, and 48,000 hydro poles.

Hydro Ottawa's new Distribution Management System includes a SCADA-centric ADMS architecture comprised of the following components: an advanced Graphical User Interface (GUI), Advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Advanced Alarm Management System, Communications Front-end Processor, Inter-control Center Communications Protocol, Historical Information System and Data Archiving, Real-time and Historical Trending and Analytics, GIS and Mapping Interface, Real-time Distribution Model and Network Visualization and Connectivity Analysis, Distribution Operator Training Simulator, Electronic Operator Logging subsystem, and a Data Engineering and Maintenance Subsystem.

"We are pleased to be working with OSI to implement this technology that will allow us to better respond to outages and, ultimately, better serve our customers. Its capabilities will also simplify our reporting and ensure we can respond to weather patterns and better plan for upgrades," said Hydro Ottawa's Chief Information and Technology Officer Mark Fernandes.

"We are very pleased to have Hydro Ottawa join our large family of Canadian customers and our growing ADMS users. We will ensure this ADMS implementation is completed according to the highest standards. We believe OSI's ADMS is the best in class and will enhance Hydro Ottawa's distribution operations and service delivery to customers," said OSI's Vice President of Distribution and Smart Grid Hormoz Kazemzadeh.
