MainPower New Zealand Limited Selects OSI Technology for Advanced Distribution Management

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been selected by MainPower New Zealand Limited (MainPower) to supply a new Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) based on OSI's monarch™ operational technology (OT) platform. This state-of-the-art solution will replace MainPower's legacy AVEVA system, enabling a more reliable, resilient, flexible, and efficient electricity distribution network.

In addition to the robust SCADA functionality of the OSI monarch platform, this comprehensive ADMS implementation will feature the following advanced applications: Load Management, Switch Order Management, Electra OMS™, OSI's next-generation Outage Management System, CHRONUS™, OSI's next-generation, time series-based historian supported by big data technology; and a full complement of advanced distribution management applications from the Spectra™ DMS suite, including Distribution System Analysis and Planning, Distribution Power Flow, Volt/VAR Control, FLISR, Feeder Reconfiguration, and Short-circuit Analysis.

"As the world and our local economy move toward decarbonization, the way in which MainPower's network is used will change," said Mark Appleman, MainPower's General Manager of Network Planning and Strategy. "Network services will need to extend beyond safe, quality and resilient network services in this 'New Energy Future.' We will also need to enable consumer energy choice, unlocking value that supports the whole of system security while further enhancing growth within the communities we serve."

A key workstream within MainPower's New Energy Future program is the upgrade of their network management systems and processes. Previously, the tools used to manage the network were disparate—in some cases self-built, and in other cases facing obsolescence.

MainPower conducted a rigorous global search for a fully integrated solution provider from Outage Management to Advanced Distribution Management. "MainPower was confident in its choice to recommend and proceed with OSI," said Appleman. "We then engaged in a 23-month program to fully implement the OSI monarch platform within the organization. This program included OSI developing specific systems to support our IoT and load management technologies."

"OSI provided timely technical support for the integration of our works and distribution management systems, load flow and safety from the network requirements. OSI was proactive with the SAT and testing of the system, ensuring it was ready for go-live. This contributed to a seamless introduction of the system into the day-to-day management our network."

"Partnering with OSI has accelerated MainPower's commitment to our shareholders, customers, and the communities we serve as we continue on our journey to a New Energy Future. We are impressed with the outcome: Our team really enjoys using the system and we believe in the benefits it brings our business. Thanks to the OSI team for their monarch system and support, past and future."

"OSI is honored to have been selected by Mainpower to provide the cornerstone technology that will enable their ability to drive better customer service," said Dan Candotti, OSI's senior director of utilities for Australia/New Zealand and Asia Pacific. "We are committed to supporting Mainpower's strategic vision for the next 15 years and beyond. We have found in Mainpower a strong and capable partner, and we are confident that with OSI they will rapidly achieve their commitment to enhance the energy value chain in the communities they serve. We thank them for their trust in OSI."
