Ketchikan Public Utilities of Alaska, Awards a Contract to OSI for Supply of a New SCADA System Based on Linux

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI), an industry leader providing open and high-performance automation solutions to electric utilities worldwide, has recently been awarded a contract to supply a replacement SCADA System to Ketchikan Public Utilities (KPU).

The new Master SCADA System will allow Ketchikan to effectively monitor and operate its generation and distribution assets, while providing future system expansion options and future power applications software.

The proposed system is based on OSI's distributed and open monarch™ architecture and includes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, DNP communications, Historical Information Archiving, and a Projection system-based map-board. The system is based on the SuSe Linux operating system for servers, Microsoft® Windows® operator workstations, and MySQL™ database management system. The project is to be fully implemented based on a fast track schedule over a 6 (six) month period.

"OSI is pleased with this latest award and we welcome KPU to our family of Linux monarch users. We will strive to make this a successful project similar to every other project we have done to date," said Bahman Hoveida, OSI President & CEO.

"Ketchikan Public Utilities needed to replace an obsolete Wismer-Becker SCADA Master in operation since 1983. We chose OSI due to their products open architecture. The OSI proposal represented the best technical and economic solution for KPU and we are excited about our future relationship with a recognized industry leader in utility automation products," said Harvey Hansen, P.E., KPU Engineering Manager.

Ketchikan Public Utilities, which is operated by the City of Ketchikan, is located on Revillagigedo Island in Southeast Alaska. The city is in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, which is the largest national forest in the United States at 17 million acres. Ketchikan has a thriving natural resource based economy, with strong fishing, timber and tourism industries. Along the famed Inside Passage of Alaska, Ketchikan sees almost 700,000 tourists each year from cruise ships alone.
