Nation's Largest Municipal Utility Selects Open Systems International to Supply its Next Generation Energy Control System

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) announces that Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has chosen OSI for the supply and implementation of LADWP's next generation Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Automatic Generation Control (SCADA/AGC), Energy Management (EMS) and Distribution Management (DMS) Systems.

After an extensive competitive search and evaluation of available products from various industry suppliers, LADWP chose OSI's monarch™ platform. In May 2001, LADWP awarded a contract to OSI for the delivery of a state of the art Energy Management System. The system will be delivered in phases and the project is due to be completed before May 2003.

The objective of this automation project is to meet the control and automation needs of the LADWP's Bulk Power (BP) as well as Power Distribution (PD) groups into the foreseeable future, and better prepare the city to cope with the volatile California energy market.

"We found monarch to be the best open platform with the ability to address LADWP's needs well into the next decade. The openness of OSI's products as well as their reputation as a company that delivers on their promises were the most important factors in our decision to partner with OSI," said Minh Le, LADWP Project Manager.

"The LADWP project is an exciting project for us. It gives OSI an opportunity to supply a large scale and state of the art system to the nation's largest municipal system at a time in which the energy crisis in California has created new technical challenges in dealing with energy supply, delivery, and system operations," said Bahman Hoveida, OSI President and CEO.

LADWP, established nearly a century ago, is the United States' largest municipal utility providing water and electricity to over 3.6 million residents and businesses throughout a 465 square-mile area of Los Angeles, California. LADWP remains one of the few viable utility entities in the state of California untouched by the recent California energy crisis.
