Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) Selects OSI Technology for New SCADA/DMS Project

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO) to implement a SCADA/DMS system, integrated with other SMECO systems as integral additions to its Smart Grid enterprise systems.

SMECO is one of the ten largest customer-owned electric cooperatives in the nation and has been ranked as top among mid-sized utilities in the JD Powers survey of customer satisfaction with electric utilities for the past 6 years. The new SCADA/DMS will add advanced capabilities that will provide SMECO with both the visualization of the current network operating conditions and optimal solutions to further improve reliability and efficiency.

"SMECO has an impressive track record in customer service and smart grid commitment," said Hormoz Kazemzadeh, Vice President of Distribution and Smart Grid at OSI. "We are very excited to have been selected by SMECO to implement our advanced DMS solution and support SMECO's efforts to realize the benefits of a smarter grid."

"We are looking forward to working with OSI to develop a state-of-the-art SCADA system for SMECO, so we can monitor and manage our electric system more intelligently," said Ken Capps, Vice President of Engineering and Operations. He added, "As a cooperative, everything we do is for our customer-members. We need the ability to integrate SCADA with advanced switching equipment and metering technology and we want to be able to use analytical and decision-making tools that will help us maintain an efficient, reliable electric system."

OSI's Spectra DMS™ provides SMECO with integrated capabilities built on OSI's monarch™ Smart Grid Platform. The advanced functionality presented by OSI's solution includes the next-generation, .NET based Graphical User Interface (GUI); Advanced SCADA; Alarm Management; Trending; Historical Information System; and Operator Training Simulator, as well as Distribution Network Operating Map; Distribution Power Flow; Volt/VAR Control; Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration; Feeder Reconfiguration; Fault Protection Analysis; Short Term Load Forecast; and Switching Order Management.

Headquartered in Hughesville, Maryland, SMECO (www.smeco.coop) is a customer-owned electric cooperative. SMECO owns and operates approximately 11,357 total miles of line, servicing over 154,000 customers throughout a territory of more than 1,150 square miles in Calvert, Charles, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties in Southern Maryland. SMECO owns and operates the transmission and distribution systems located on U.S. Navy facilities at Patuxent River, Webster Field and Solomons Recreation Center.
