Australia's Snowy Hydro Limited Selects OSI Technology for a New Advanced Generation Management System Platform

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has been awarded a contract by iconic Australian company Snowy Hydro Limited (Snowy Hydro) to implement a new advanced SCADA and Generation Management system based on OSI's monarch™ (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform.

Snowy Hydro is an electricity generation and retailing company in Australia that owns, manages and operates a generation portfolio of over 5,645 MW that includes 4,195 megawatts from the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, three gas-fired power stations in New South Wales and Victoria and diesel peaking generators in South Australia.

Snowy Hydro's new OSI SCADA system will replace their present legacy ABB Network Manager Energy Management System, which has been in operation since 1996. The new system will include advanced functionality: a next-generation Graphical User Interface, Advanced Situational Awareness capability, Advanced Alarm Management, Generation Monitoring and Control functionality, OSI's advanced CHRONUS Data Historian for Operations use, extensive communications capability including an interface to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), as well as a comprehensive Operator Training Simulator for realistic hydro and electrical operation simulation. As a pioneering company, the project will include Australia's first disaster recovery system hosted using OSI's secured cloud computing capabilities.

"Technology is at the heart of Snowy Hydro's business to improve the reliability and capability of our unique assets," Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad said. "We are partnering with OSI to build the best solution for our business and we are excited about working with them. We look forward to implementation of the advanced SCADA/GMS solution and an ongoing relationship with OSI."
