Historian

CHRONUS™, OSI's modern and highly efficient data warehousing application suite, is the industry's first historian to leverage the massive throughput of "Big Data" technologies. Big Data is the back-end basis for many large-scale web analytics and social media sites that process and store tens of millions of data points and transactions.

Oil & Gas assets generate significant amounts of data, regardless of their position in the industry's supply and value chains. Many existing historian technology solutions are not designed to process and store data in a modern and useful solution, while also being competitively priced. At OSI, we provide modern and elegant solutions to deliver the most advantages to our oil & gas customers. The design and development of CHRONUS was based on our powerful native historian design that has been in use for decades. In the OSI Oil & Gas Business Unit, CHRONUS is proposed as a standalone product with all features and solutions that are needed in each of our three major segments. CHRONUS has proven to be by far the best Big Data solution and analytics tool for upstream field production, midstream, and downstream applications.

Upstream CHRONUS

In the oil & gas industry, the well development and monitoring process generates large volumes of data that require long-term storage and offer an invaluable resource for analytics. The upstream sector can gain significant insight when Big Data analytics are applied to this vast data repository for managing seismic data.

When searching for petroleum sources, upstream analytics begin with the acquisition of seismic data collected via sensors across a potential area of interest. With the data stored in CHRONUS, applications process and analyze the data to determine locations for exploratory drilling. Combining seismic data with other data sets (historical data from former drilling operations, research data, etc.) can help determine the potential volume of oil and gas in oil reservoirs.

Predictive models also provide the means to optimize drilling processes, enabling the forecast of potential equipment failures, which aids in reducing downtime and resource allocation. During the drilling process, sensors collect high-speed data and store it within CHRONUS. This data, when blended with the equipment metadata (model, operational settings, etc.) is processed by machine-learning algorithms to identify usage patterns that are likely to result in equipment failures.

Using a variety of downhole sensors (temperature sensors, acoustic sensors, pressure sensors, etc.) companies gather data needed to improve reservoir production. Reservoir management applications powered by CHRONUS and Big Data analytics provide timely and actionable information about changes in reservoir pressure, temperature, flow, and acoustics, increasing insight and control over operations to drive reservoir performance and profitability.

Midstream CHRONUS

The complex logistics in the petroleum industry create challenges for companies seeking to transport oil and gas with the lowest risk possible. They employ a variety of sensors to collect data and ensure the safe delivery of their energy products. The large data storage volume of CHRONUS enables predictive maintenance applications to analyze the sensor data from pipelines and tankers. This process can aid in detecting abnormalities (fatigue cracks, stress corrosion, seismic ground movements, etc.), which helps to prevent accidents, facilitates the staging of crews and equipment, and reduces the economic impact of any downtime.

Downstream CHRONUS

Using Big Data and predictive analytics, oil & gas companies can improve asset management while reducing downtime and maintenance costs of their refining equipment. Data from CHRONUS concerning the performance of the equipment is analyzed by comparing its historical and current operating conditions. Based on the equipment's end-of-life criteria and failure conditions, the performance prediction is tuned further. The estimated performance of the equipment is visualized and presented to maintenance specialists, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding the life cycle of the asset.
