OSI Successfully Deploys New Generation Management System for Direct Energy, North America's Largest Competitive Energy Supplier

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has successfully delivered and implemented a large-scale new Generation Management System (GMS) for North America's largest competitive energy supplier, Direct Energy LP, based on OSI's monarch™ (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) platform.

Operating with more than six million customer relationships in ten Canadian provinces, forty-six US states and the District of Columbia, Direct Energy is the largest competitive retailer of energy and related services in North America. Direct Energy owns and operates three combined cycle power plants and receives the output of five wind farms under power purchase agreements within the ERCOT market, with a total generation capacity of more than 1,200 MWs.

Direct Energy previously used a third-party Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) service provider to communicate with ERCOT and monitor/report/control the real-time operation of their generation assets. Direct Energy intended to move these ERCOT market assets under their own control, as well as to expand their generation assets within the PJM, NYISO and ISO NE markets. In service of these expansion goals, as well as to improve operational reliability, efficiency and compliance to NERC regulatory requirements, Direct Energy has implemented a comprehensive new GMS system based on OSI's monarch automation platform.

This comprehensive new monarch based GMS system includes the advanced functionality of OSI's next-generation, .NET based Graphical User Interface (GUI); Remote Console GUI; Dynamic Tabular Display Subsystem; Data Engineering and Maintenance Subsystem; Advanced Alarm Management System; Real-time and Historical Trending; Communications Front-end Processor; Historical Information System and Data Archiving; Secured Inter-control Center Communications Protocol; Calculation and Scripting Subsystem; Electronic Operator Logging System; Disturbance Data Collection; Automatic Generation Control and Dispatch; Energy Market Control Algorithm; and Market Operations System software products.
