Empire District Electric Company Awards OSI a Contract to Supply a Comprehensive Linux-Based Energy Management System

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI) has recently been awarded a contract to supply an Energy Management System (EMS) to Empire District Electric Company (Empire) of Missouri. The new EMS system will be installed in the Empire System Operations Control Center in Joplin, Missouri, replacing an aging Telegyr 8500 Energy Management System. The OSI system will allow Empire to optimally manage its current generation, transmission and distribution assets, and its market operations in the Southwest Power Pool, while providing the capability to meet future growth and expansion and functionality requirements in a cost effective and efficient manner.

The proposed system, based on OSI's distributed and open monarch™ architecture, includes Automatic Generation Control (AGC), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, DNP communications, Historical Information Archiving, Contingency Analysis, as well as State Estimator and Topology Processing functionality. The project, which employs the SuSE Linux operating system for servers, Microsoft® Windows® for operator workstations and MySQL™ database management system, is to be fully implemented in two phases.

"We welcome Empire to our family of OSI users, and our Linux family in particular. Empire's decision to select the OSI system is a true testament to our proven approach in delivering the best technology at the lowest ownership cost to our customers. We welcome our new partnership with Empire and look forward to a very successful project," said Bahman Hoveida, OSI President & CEO.

"Empire believes OSI will provide an EMS system that will be a good match for us going forward.
