Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO) awards OSI a contract to supply a new SCADA Replacement System

Open Systems International, Inc. (OSI), an industry leader providing open and high-performance automation solutions to electric utilities worldwide, has recently been awarded a contract to supply a state-of-the-art SCADA and Information Management system to Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO).

NIPCO's legacy SCADA system no longer supported their real-time information management needs so they sought out a vendor to provide a new integrated open system able to support their expanded needs in data communications with member cooperatives and provide other salient features. After a comprehensive market search, NIPCO decided to implement OSI's monarch™ platform. The monarch system will include RTU communications to over 100 Remote Terminal Units using DNP 3 and other legacy protocols, SCADA functionality, Trending, and Historical Information Management. The system is based on a Microsoft® Windows platform and the Microsoft SQL Server Database Management System. The project will be completed four months after contract award.

NIPCO (www.nipco.com) is a non-profit, member-owned cooperative located in LeMars, Iowa. NIPCO was formed in 1949 by the RECs (Rural Electric Cooperatives) and was created to provide a system of delivery for hydropower from the Missouri River dams. As the rural consumers' demand for electricity increased beyond the available hydropower, electric cooperatives in the eight states of the Missouri Basin, including NIPCO, formed the Basin Electric Power Cooperative. This super generation and transmission cooperative provides the additional power needed to supply rural homes, farms, and other industry. NIPCO serves seven member cooperatives in the state of Iowa.
